Hey gang.
It is with great pride and satisfaction that I announce the actual, irreversible Grand Opening of our new circus arts center, THE HIPPODROME, in Portland OR.
In Summary: I'm doing the Grand Opening show November 17th. Starting that day, we'll have the space open during all days and some nights for classes, rehearsals, and performances. And we need the help of our amazing tech people to set up as much top-notch apparatus as we can squeeze in there, starting around October 20th.
If you've got a taste for details, read on.
What Creature and I have put together is a deal for a full-fledged circus venue, owned by my employer Mike Wolfson, housed in what was once the main room of the BComplex/MeowMeow/Loveland/Mercury Room/Euphoria. It's a 1000-capacity all-ages venue with a big stage, big PA system, 2o-foot ceiling, and big sexy exposed beams. This means that not only are we managing to avoid paying tens of thousands of dollars in renovation, insurance, and monthly rent; we are in fact pulling a salary to run the place. I'm the booker and Creature is the production manager.
So. There are a number of things we need to do to prepare:
I've got the Grand Opening scheduled for November 17th, with Batty's Hippodrome doing an 8-10:30 show and PURE Cirkus doing a much darker 11-12:30 show. Then I want to get a DJ in there (very likely Gypsy Sound System and Global Ruckus, who will already be playing next door).
The room will become available for all our nefarious plans circa October 20th. That means we'll have just under one month to set up whatever circus apparatus we want in the room for all our rehearsals, workshops, and performances. We have highly qualified friends who have offered to install first-rate professional aerial rigs, trapeze, and other hard-to-find trappings of the big top; though exactly what we'll have available when will be dictated both by constraints of time and budget.
Then, starting November 17th, the room will be available in the daytime and some evenings for rehearsals, classes, meetings, and performances. Creature will spearhead this operation in the same way I'll spearhead the show side of things, though both of us will surely be entangled in all of it. If you or anyone you know is looking for a place to practice/teach/study things like: aerial, juggling, fire spinning, dance, yoga, martial arts, tumbling, clowning, theater, or any other specialized skill within the broad definition of Circus; please let us know and we can find you a spot on the schedule.
Please do let me know if you can get in on this in any capacity. I'm sure we'll also need people to come and help us clean/build/decorate the place during that crucial 10/20 - 11/17 period as well, so even your totally unskilled friend can get in on the fun.
